Membership Terms and Conditions
These terms and conditions govern membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals (“ISP” or “the Institute”). By applying for or renewing membership, you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions in their entirety. Please read them carefully before submitting your application.
Eligibility and application
Membership of the ISP is open to individuals who meet the eligibility criteria for their chosen membership grade. By submitting an application, the applicant confirms that all information provided is accurate, complete, and up to date. The ISP reserves the right to refuse or revoke membership at any time where information supplied is found to be false, misleading, or materially incomplete.
Membership fees and renewal
The following provisions apply to all membership fees:
- Membership is valid only while membership fees are paid in full and on time.
- Fees are due on the renewal date and must be settled within the 30 day grace period.
- Membership fees are non-refundable. No refund will be given for any unused portion of a membership period, whether upon voluntary cancellation, suspension, or expulsion.
- Membership fees may vary according to membership grade and payment frequency. The ISP may review and adjust its membership fees annually. Members will be given reasonable advance written notice of any fee changes applicable to their membership before the relevant renewal date.
- Where payment is made by direct debit or standing order, it is the member’s responsibility to ensure sufficient funds are available on the due date.
Suspension and cancellation for non-payment
Where membership fees remain outstanding beyond the grace period, the ISP reserves the right to take one or more of the following actions:
- Suspend membership with immediate effect, resulting in the loss of all membership benefits and the right to use ISP designatory letters, pending settlement of the outstanding balance;
- Cancel membership entirely if fees remain unpaid following a period of suspension, without further notice;
- Require full payment of any outstanding fees, including any applicable administration charges, before reinstatement of membership will be considered.
The ISP will endeavour to provide written notice of impending suspension or cancellation before action is taken. However, the ISP shall not be liable for any loss arising from a failure to receive such notice where the member’s contact details are not current.
Code of conduct
All members are required to uphold the ISP Code of Conduct at all times. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Acting with honesty, integrity, and professionalism in all sales-related activities;
- Treating customers, colleagues, competitors, and other stakeholders with fairness and respect;
- Not engaging in conduct, or making public statements, that could bring the ISP or the sales profession into disrepute;
- Complying with all applicable laws and regulations relevant to the member’s professional activities.
The ISP Code of Conduct is available in full at the-isp.org and may be updated from time to time. Members are responsible for ensuring they remain familiar with the current version. Continued membership following notification of any update to the Code of Conduct constitutes acceptance of the revised Code.
Ethical standards
Members commit to upholding high ethical standards in their professional practice. This includes:
- Avoiding conflicts of interest and disclosing promptly to relevant parties any that may arise;
- Not engaging in, facilitating, or condoning misleading, deceptive, or high-pressure sales practices;
- Maintaining the confidentiality of client, employer, and stakeholder information in accordance with applicable law;
- Supporting and promoting a culture of ethical selling within their organisation and the wider profession;
- Not making false or unsubstantiated claims about products, services, or professional qualifications.
Professional development
Members are expected to commit to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) appropriate to their membership grade. Obligations include:
- Completing the minimum CPD hours or points required for their grade in each membership year, as published by the ISP; (30 minutes per week requirement)
- Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date CPD record and producing it upon request by the ISP if this record is not maintained within your ISP membership details.
- Engaging in learning and development activities that enhance professional competence and support career progression;
- Adhering to any CPD audit or verification requirements introduced by the ISP from time to time.
Failure to meet CPD requirements may result in a downgrade of membership grade, suspension of membership, or other action as determined by the ISP in its discretion.
Misconduct and disciplinary action
The ISP reserves the right to investigate any complaint or allegation of misconduct against a member. Misconduct includes, but is not limited to:
- Breach of the ISP Code of Conduct or these terms and conditions;
- Dishonest, fraudulent, or criminal conduct relevant to the member’s professional activities;
- Conduct likely to bring the ISP or the sales profession into disrepute;
- Misrepresentation of membership status, membership grade, or ISP qualifications to any party;
- Failure to cooperate with an ISP investigation or disciplinary process.
Following investigation, the ISP may, at its discretion, take one or more of the following actions:
- Issue a formal written warning;
- Suspend membership for a defined or indefinite period;
- Cancel membership with immediate effect.
Where membership is cancelled for misconduct, no refund of fees will be made for any unexpired portion of the membership period. The ISP will operate a fair and transparent disciplinary process,
and members will be given a reasonable opportunity to respond to any allegations before a final decision is reached.
Voluntary cancellation
Members may cancel their membership at any time by giving written notice to the ISP. Cancellation will take effect at the end of the current membership year or upon such earlier date as the ISP may confirm in writing. No refund will be payable for any unexpired portion of the membership period.
Use of ISP designations and membership marks
Members in good standing are entitled to use the designatory letters and membership marks associated with their grade, subject to any conditions published by the ISP. These rights lapse immediately upon suspension or cancellation of membership for any reason. Continued use of ISP designations or membership marks following the lapse of membership may result in legal action being taken by the ISP.
Amendments to these terms
The ISP reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time. Members will be given reasonable written notice of any material changes. Continued membership following notification of such changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms and conditions.
These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising in connection with membership of the ISP shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. Queries regarding membership should be directed to the ISP at the-isp.org.
